Program Overview

The Associate in Arts degree with a transfer intent in Visual Art is designed for students seeking to transfer to a four-year degree program or public university in to study Visual Arts such as drawing, ceramics, painting and photography.

This pathway provides students with the Associate in Arts (AA) degree’s general education courses as well as prerequisites and electives that will prepare them for transfer.

All students with an AA degree from Polk State qualify for the state of Florida’s 2+2 articulation agreement which promises admission to a state university.

Black and White Photography

This is an introductory course in black and white photography that imparts the basic skills, principles and techniques of photography as a tool of communication and art. Instruction includes the use of the 35mm camera, film processing and basic darkroom skills.

Mural Painting

This course covers the procurement, design and execution of interior and exterior murals. Mural projects are usually a joint effort among students, community members and governmental institutions. Projects provide an opportunity for students to take part in the diverse process of planning, creating and exhibiting projects.

Drawing and Composition I

This studio course introduces fundamental drawing skills and techniques through observation and the application of traditional approaches to line, form, composition, perspective and chiaroscuro. Students learn to assess proportion, create volume, and convey the illusion of space through the study of these techniques.

Portfolio and Resume Development

This capstone course guides students in assembling a portfolio, writing an artist’s statement and developing a résumé. It also covers professional development skills essential for college admissions, employment opportunities and juried competitions.
